"The Last Supper" - Gospels Interpret the Event

Jesus' followers transform his story from the (traditional) Exodus story into one which they could interpret their own struggles, sufferings, and their hopes.

Mark
Mark transforms Jesus' capture, torture, and death from disasters to necessary parts of the narrative
Jesus deliberately moved toward his death ... realizing it was necessary ... voluntarily offering himself as a sacrifice
Jesus' blood poured for many ... forgiveness of sin - (recalls Moses: "Behold the blood of the covenant" Jesus is shedding "my blood of the covenant"
Opens: Jesus'  baptism >> into God's family Newcomers: Baptism >> into God's family
Concludes: Night of betrayal (disciples gathered round) Concludes: We (current) disciples gather to reenact ...
Mark's version - establishes storyline for future Christian rituals of baptism and the sacred meal. Exodus (event) - establishes storyline for future Jewish rituals of blessing and the sacred meal.
Participants of the 'Lord's supper' weave the story of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection into their own lives. Participants of the Passover supper weave the story of Moses' life, and God's redemption of the Israelites from slavery to liberation - fulfilling the covenant.
Luke and Paul:
Jesus blesses the bread and wine and tells his followers to 'do this in remembrance of me' "Whenever you eat this bread... you proclaim the Lord's death, until he comes."
Passover recalls God's deliverance of Israel though Moses God is now delivering his people through Jesus
Interpreted as a 'death-feast' that also looks forward in hope.
John: (Paul)
Places the event as occurring a day prior (to Mark/Matt)
Jesus sentenced to death (Friday) Preparation of the Passover lamb (Friday - bef. Sabbath)
Jesus legs were not broken (on the cross) No bone of lamb should be broken during prep (Ex.12.46)

John points to Exodus text as prophesy... Jesus' legs were not broken...

Draws from Jeremiah: Behold the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel.. not like the covenant I made with their fathers ... and I will remember sin no more. [Jer. 31:31-34]
