Current Interests and Research:
Professor Reidenberg is currently a Principal Investigator on the Usable Privacy Policy Project (http://www.usableprivacy.org/), a multi-year collaborative project funded by the National Science Foundation and involving Fordham CLIP and computer scientists from Carnegie Mellon University, University of Cincinatti, University of Michigan and Stanford.   Professor Reidenberg is also working on several projects related to information technology policy, law and governance in the digital age and privacy:  including issues related to the transparency of citizens; information surveillance; education technologies, student information and privacy.

Biography:


Joel R. Reidenberg holds the Stanley D. and Nikki Waxberg Chair in Law at Fordham University where he is the Founding Academic Director of the Center on Law and Information Policy at Fordham Law School.  He served as the inaugural Microsoft Visiting Professor of Information Technology Policy at Princeton University teaching in the computer science department and more recently as visiting faculty teaching cybersecurity policy at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School.  Reidenberg has also previously taught at the Universite de Paris-Sorbonne and the Institut d'etudes Politques de Paris.  Formerly, Reidenberg served as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Chief Academic Officer of Fordham University and was also a former President of the University’s Faculty Senate.  


Reidenberg is an expert on information technology law and policy.   His scholarship has appeared in leading law journals including the Emory Law Journal, Hastings Law Journal, Houston Law Review, Stanford Law Review, Texas Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and the Wake Forest Law Review.   Outside the United States, he has published widely in Europe.


Professor Reidenberg is a member of the American Law Institute and is an adviser to the ALI's Principles of the Law: Data Privacy.   He has testified frequently before the U.S. Congress on data privacy issues, served as a consultant to both the Federal Trade Commission and the European Commission, and served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington in connection with privacy litigation.  Most recently, he has served as an expert on intellectual property for the World Intellectual Property Organization.  He has also chaired the Section on Defamation and Privacy of the Association of American Law Schools and is a former chair of the association's Section on Law and Computers.

Prior joining the Fordham law faculty, Reidenberg practiced law in Washington, DC with the international telecommunications group of the firm Debevoise & Plimpton and has also served as a member of several Advisory Panels for the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment.   He is admitted to the Bars of New York and the District of Columbia.
