Description |
The emergence and development of Europe from the decline of the Roman Empire to the early Renaissance. A topical study of political, social, economic, religious and cultural issues, ideas and institutions.
Discussions will be based on primary sources illustrating such topics as the migrations and cultural changes of Late Antiquity, medieval families and households, town and country, papal claims and religious reform, European expansion and the Crusades, the crisis of the fourteenth century and royal courts. Issues and debates in the secondary literature will be introduced in the discussions and assignments. |
