Read 02-19

Up

1) Reading for Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008 (note date shift due to holiday)

Reading focus:

We are continuing with the third of our Canonical Gospels, the Gospel of John. At the same time, we are now being introduced to key early Christian thinkers, like Bishop Irenaus, who with others will 'understand' Christianity afresh and help chart its course for centuries thereafter.

Focus:

1) Review: Review your notes from Thursday's class that connects John with Genesis. (See the 'in-class write-up' too)

2) Connect: Connect between John, the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, and what we learned about Paul. What is kept, what changes?

3) Read: Pagels' essay "One God...". Here she introduces us to early Christian writers and thinkers, such as Bishop Irenaus. What is at stake for the Bishop? For Christianity? What is deemed 'Christian' and why? What are the consequences?
